The centerpiece of the program, Holocaust Cantata: Songs from the Camps consists of 13 movements that alternate between music and readings. Based on research of original music sung by incarcerated inmates in Holocaust concentration camps, this 40-minute cantata is an emotional, musical journey through one of the bleakest episodes in human history. Working from translations of original Polish materials found in the archives of the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, D.C. and starting with just a single line of melody, McCullough has fashioned a haunting choral tribute to the 6 million Jews who were systematically persecuted and murdered as well as to the millions of other individuals the Nazi Party classified as “undesirables,” including Poles, Romanian gypsies, homosexuals, transsexuals, political opponents, religious dissidents, the mentally ill and the physically disabled. What emerges from the insanity of one of history’s worst examples of man’s inhumanity to man is a sense of music’s life-affirming powers.

Soloists from Polyphony: Voices of New Mexico and Chorus Master Maxine Thévenot join forces with instrumental musicians from around Albuquerque in our 10th annual performance of Handel's "CHILDREN'S MESSIAH."

Admission is free. We encourage everyone to bring 2 non-perishable food items for the Cathedral's Food Pantry. Items the pantry desperately needs include: peanut butter, canned tuna, spam, and canned chicken - no beans please. Your generosity is very much appreciated!

Santa Fe will burn ZOZOBRA and all of our 2024 Gloom 

August 29 & August 31, 2024

Come see the new musical fable titled Zozobra: The Revenge, performed at The Lensic Performing Arts Center. Santa Fe’s own New York Times best-selling author, Douglas Preston, created the twisted tale’s libretto, and the music is composed by Joe Illick, former Artistic Director of the Fort Worth Opera. Members of Polyphony: Voices of New Mexico will form the Opera Chorus and provide soloists for the world premiere performance. Don't miss it!

The Episcopal Cathedral of St. John

This program will be performed by Polyphony: Voices of New Mexico, under the direction of Maxine Thévenot, in collaboration with NYC-based organist Stephen Tharp, cellist Amy Huzjak, pianist Nate Salazar, and percussionist, Alexis Corbin. 

The program is centered around Cantos Sagrados by Scottish composer James MacMillan. The program will also include the world premiere performance of The Year of the Horse by British composer, Cecilia McDowall, commissioned in memory of Roan Mulholland. In writing this work MacMillan wanted to compose something which was both timeless and contemporary, both sacred and secular. The three poems are concerned with political repression in Latin America and are deliberately coupled with traditional religious texts to emphasize a deeper solidarity with the poor of that sub-continent.
